John Camp

24/10/2016

Chambers is sad to report that John Camp, a member of Chambers from 1970 to 1986, died last week after a short illness.  He had a distinguished copyright practice and edited Halsbury’s Laws on the subject.

After leaving Chambers he was ordained deacon in 1988 and priest in 1989.  He qualified in forensic psychotherapy and served as chaplain to St Andrew’s Hospital, Northampton, the largest psychiatric hospital in the country, for 13 years. He also held various part-time judicial appointments and heard many appeals in immigration and asylum cases. He was Chairman of Wycombe Health Authority from 1982 to 1986 and served as a member of other NHS bodies, including the former Oxford Regional Health Authority and the Mental Health Act Commission. He was an honorary legal advisor to the British Medical Acupuncture Society for many years and honorary clinical ethics advisor to St. Andrew’s Hospital.

He was a ruthless finisher of the Times crossword and a supportive friend.  An occasionally crusty exterior belied a generosity of spirit and an engaging sense of humour.

He kept in contact with several members of chambers and will be fondly remembered.  Our thoughts are with his widow, Virginia, and their two children, Christopher and Elizabeth.
